Prefilled with PayPal's US domestic PayPal Checkout rate of 3.49% + $0.49. Other payment types, international payments and other currencies use different rates, so edit the fields to match yours.

Fee = payment × percentage + fixed fee

A $100 payment at 3.49% + $0.49 costs $3.98, so you receive $96.02. That's an effective rate of 3.98%, higher than the headline percentage because of the fixed fee.

The fixed fee bites hardest on small payments. On $10 the same rates cost $0.84, which is 8.4%. That's worth knowing if you sell low-priced items or take small deposits.

To receive an exact amount, you can't just add the fee on top, because PayPal takes its percentage of the higher amount too. The right formula is (amount wanted + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − percentage), which is what the reverse box uses.

PaymentFee at 3.49% + $0.49Effective rate
$10$0.848.4%
$50$2.244.5%
$100$3.984.0%
$500$17.943.6%

Small payments carry a much higher effective rate than large ones.

Payment fees are one of several per-order costs.

Processing is only one slice of what a sale costs you. Product, shipping, packaging and ads all come out too, and the Shopify profit margin calculator shows all of them together.

Common questions about the PayPal Fee Calculator

How much does PayPal charge per transaction?
For US domestic PayPal Checkout payments, PayPal's published rate is 3.49% plus a fixed fee of $0.49 per transaction. Other payment methods and currencies differ.
How do I calculate how much to charge to receive a set amount?
Add the fixed fee to the amount you want, then divide by 1 minus the percentage fee as a decimal. To receive $100 at 3.49% + $0.49: (100 + 0.49) ÷ 0.9651 = $104.12.
Why is the effective rate higher than 3.49%?
Because of the fixed fee, which is a larger share of small payments.
Are these rates current?
They're PayPal's published US rates at the time of writing. Rates change, so edit the fields to match your own account.
